We tend to think career-defining decisions are obvious: accepting a new role, negotiating a promotion or earning another credential.
In reality, many of the choices that shape a career look much smaller at the time. They arrive disguised as an extra project, a relationship worth investing in, a difficult conversation or an opportunity that's easy to decline because it doesn't seem immediately important.
