A career setback can teach you something useful. It can also teach you the wrong lesson.

After a layoff, a failed promotion, a difficult boss or a high-profile mistake, we naturally try to make sense of what happened. The risk is turning one experience into a rule about what to do next: don’t trust the company, don’t take that kind of role again, don’t speak up, don’t take the risk.
